a handful of ground spelt
a handful of whole spelt kernels (go to your local health food store)

gallon of water
boil like hell
add some water and boil some more

Spelts' a type of grain. Prob could use barley as an alternative.

It's the cusp of soup season here - we have just entered summer so the soup pot will be stored away until autumn.

Beef knuckle soup, awesome. I'll see if our local grocer has beef knuckles lying around (they're common, right?). Thanks for the recipe!

CK - as lee wrote, its a grain. much like oats or rye or wheat. just not that commonly found in stores other than health oriented ones.

lee - its cold round these here parts. and that means soup. barley makes things a bit too thick if you put too much in. so for this recipe theres only a handful. dont want to overpower the richness imparted by the other ingredients.
this recipe is german and has some frighteningly long german name that takes longer to pronounce than it does to prepare, cook and eat the soup and watch a football game.

MCPWD - no need to make us east-coasters drool with jealousy... its raining and dreary here.

CG - i should give him your number. youll do a better job of convincing him than i will...

goodfather - dont know how common they are. but it makes a hell of a rich taste. and thats what we're after. so ask and ye shall receive. worse comes to worse, find a spare cow lying around...

SSP - soup is (was) delishiss. homemade granola. good good good.

i am sounding WAY too domestic. i shall have to go find a power tool of some sort....
